Washington state GOP attacks Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama was in Seattle today and the state Republican Party there greeted her with a Web video questioning her patriotism. Politico has the story.
It starts with a clip of Obama saying last February that she was proud of her country "for the first time in my adult life." It then features a series of people saying they're proud of their country and finishes with a flag waving and a woman saying the pledge of allegiance.
Obama spokesman Bill Burton told Politico the spot was "beyond sadness" and asked, "how does it strengthen our country to pollute our politics with false and mean-spirited attacks?"
The Democratic National Committee circulated a statement from Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, who was appearing with Obama in the state. "If John McCain is serious about running a 'respectful' campaign on the issues, he and Republican leaders like Dino Rossi will denounce this tasteless attack ad and tell the state Republican Party to pull the plug on it immediately," she said.
(Update at 9 p.m. ET: RNC spokesman Danny Diaz said the state party video was "completely independent" of the national party and the McCain campaign, and asked when Barack Obama would rein in Democrats pressing for release of Cindy McCain's tax returns and raising questions about whether the McCain campaign paid enough for use of her corporate plane).
Earlier today, Mark reported on Barack Obama's interview with Glamour magazine in which he said the attacks on his wife were "infuriating, but not surprising" and asked people to "debate me, not her."
